Blogger, Tim Denning, had a rude awakening last year when his email marketing provider deleted his account without warning.
The list he’d spent 5 years building was gone in a heartbeat, leaving him scratching his head wondering what he had done wrong.
It didn’t matter that he was paying $373 per month for the service, nor that he had a spotless record for all the years before.
Now, I don’t know the rights and wrongs in his particular case.
But I do know his experience isn’t uncommon.
And it’s certainly not just confined to the policy of a single provider.
Fact is, all email marketing providers are concerned with one thing.
Deliverability.
And in a world of automation and machine learning, the algorithms don’t care about context or nuance.
If the computer says NO, you’re gone!
Problem is, we are all human.
And even with the best of intentions, we all make mistakes from time to time.
Or as Tim puts it:
“Living in a world of rules you don’t know you’re breaking, hidden in lengthy terms of service documents that no one reads and that requires a legal background to understand makes us all vulnerable.”
